Bremerton Bulkhead Removal

Mid Sound worked with a private landowner in Bremerton who wanted to remove his failing bulkhead.  He had received funding from Shore Friendly Kitsap for the project, but wanted help researching contractors, overseeing their work, and finishing the native planting.

Mid Sound was happy to help with this project, which was a great example of how private individuals can take action to help salmon and orcas on their own properties.

Why remove a bulkhead?
Healthy beaches are important habitat for salmon. Juvenile Chinook from Puget Sound rivers migrate along the shoreline as they head out towards the ocean. As they migrate, smaller juvenile Chinook stay closer to the shoreline, eating bugs that fall from trees on the shore, and hiding in the masses of fallen leaves.

Beaches are also important for the small fish – called forage fish – that are one of salmon’s favorite food sources.  These forage fish spawn directly on the beach, and bulkheads shorten the beach and reduce the amount of area where they can spawn.  Without these sand lance and surf smelt, the salmon don’t have enough food to eat.
