National Estuary Week: Sept 17-24

SATURDAY, SEPT 17

  • 10am – 12pm: GETTING YOUR FEET WET at the Point No Point Lighthouse
    ( 9009 Point No Point Rd NE, in Hansville )
    •  Ever wondered how to work with Salmon in the Schools? Would you like to try doing surveys in the creeks, or help monitor in the estuary?  Talk with community members young and old who are contributing to our critical pool of citizen science in an interactive morning out at Point No Point! Learn how kids & adults in Kitsap County can come close to and care for salmon and the habitats that support them.
  • 7-8pm: FREE Showing of THE GREATEST MIGRATION at Kingston’s Firehouse Theater
    ( 11171 NE State Hwy 104, in Kingston )
    • Kick off National Estuary Week with a film by Wild & Scenic Festival honoree, Andy Maser. The Greatest Migration traces the epic path of Snake River salmon, whose journey from Alaska, through Washington and Oregon to Idaho’s Snake River takes them more than 900 miles inland, with elevation gains of nearly 7,000 feet to reach their spawning grounds. Join Mid Sound Fisheries in this evening for the whole family, sponsored by Firehouse owner, Terry Delegeane. Learn about the habitat stewardship and restoration we can do here at home to boost salmon recovery. Concessions available for purchase. First come first served; doors open at 6:30.

SUNDAY, SEPT 18

  • 6:00 pm: ESTUARY TRIVIA at Downpour Brewing
    ( 10991 NE State Hwy 104, in Kingston )
    •  It’s Estuary Trivia time again! Downpour Brewing teams with Mid Sound Fisheries to Fish for Answers! Not to be confused with our free monthly Fourth Friday Walk & Talk of the same name at Point No Point, Trivia is serious business! I mean, really? How estuary astute can you be? Come laugh, compete & learn what you might not already know about this local resource! FREE to play, but hints will cost ya! Prizes for winners. Drinks & light snacks available for purchase. Registration opens at 5:30. Come a little early to find a table & a salmon savvy ringer for your team! If you’re the ringer, swim on in anytime before 6:00! 

MONDAY, SEPT 19

  • 11:00 am: WATERSHED FAMILY STORY TIME at Little Boston Library
    ( 31980 Little Boston Rd NE, Kingston )
    • Plan to bring your little one to the Little Boston branch of the Kitsap Regional Library for a special Monday Story Time, September 19th at 11:00. Youth Services Librarian, Ana Cuprill reads The Birdwatchers, by Simon James in celebration of National Estuary Week. Local Audubon birding legends Gene & Sandy Bullock will be at the library to answer questions you or your child might have about the important roles estuaries play in the lives of birds who live along and migrate through Point No Point throughout the year. Kitsap Regional Library will sponsor The Birdwatchers  StoryWalk®  at Point No Point Park September 17-24.  To learn more, visit the library’s story time page.

THURSDAY, SEPT 22

  • 3:30-4:30pm: KATHY IS NUTS… about Salmon! 
    • Join longtime local Fish Biologist Kathy Peters for a late afternoon snack! Mid Sound will be serving up PB&J’s from CB’s Nuts, on bread from Greenwoodes Farm Organic Bakery – both local Hansville-owned businesses. Don’t miss this great opportunity to hear some of Kathy’s salmon stories, and a little salmon-recovery history from the past 30 years in our neck of the woods. We’ll have some quiet habitat-related activities for little ones! Bring a folding chair if you like… we’ll see you at CB’s!

FRIDAY, SEPT 23

  • 1-3pm: RESTORATION BEACH WALK at Point No Point Park 
    ( 9009 Point No Point Rd NE, in Hansville… Meet in the main parking lot, near the restrooms )
    • Walk & talk with the County, with Jessica Côté of Blue Coast Engineering & members of Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group. We’ll view the current marsh eastward from the corner of Hillview Lane, and talk about the studies being conducted. We’ll take a closer look at both current conditions & scenarios for restoration, and we’ll spend a little time on the N beach, too.   • 4-6pm: BROWN BAG BIRDING at Point No Point Park
    ( 9009 Point No Point Rd NE, in Hansville… Meet at the Lighthouse )
    • Learn about the diverse birdlife living in and around a healthy estuary! Join Mid Sound Fisheries and Kitsap Audubon for a family friendly celebration of estuarine habitat with birding experts and novices alike. See and touch the tools birders use to make and record observations at Point No Point. Enjoy interactive activities with your kids and get advice about the latest birding apps. Learn from some wise birds about why the estuary and nearshore in Hansville are listed among Audbon’s Important Bird Areas in the United States. Bring a sack snack to tide you over, or plan to move to the beach for a picnic dinner! To learn more, visit Kitsap Audbon.

SATURDAY, SEPT 24

  • 10am – 12pm: SAND SALMON & NATURE JOURNALING at the N Beach & the Marsh
    ( 9009 Point No Point Rd NE, in Hansville )
    • National Estuary Week comes to a close with an appreciation of the beauty of Point No Point. Bring your nature journal & capture moments up close along the Marsh Trail. Those who wish to get their hands dirty, join Mid Sound on the N Beach for Sand Salmon. Dig in and sculpt a sculpin, or a hairy shore crab, a hovering heron or one of the myriad other critters that live within a healthy, functioning estuary! Drop your journal off with Mid Sound on the N Beach by 11:45, and it will be displayed tonight at the Bakery!*  Sand sculptures will be photographed by noon, too, so everyone can see your masterpiece at the Bakery, too! 
  • 5-7pm: It’s a SALMONCHANTED EVENING at Greenwoodes Organic Bakery
    ( 11171 NE State Hwy 104, in Kingston )
    • Join Mid Sound Fisheries for an early evening of estuary-inspired ART, organic local food & drink at Greenwoodes Farm Organic Bakery on Saturday, September 24th from 5-7pm. Support local artists as they celebrate the magic of the estuary in this final event of National Estuary Week. Greenwoodes Farm will serve up Alicia’s wonderful selections of coffee, wine, and fresh-baked items for the entire family, and the pop-up gallery includes a silent auction!
